Nikon Coolpix S230 10MP Digital Camera Review

When I first turned on the camera and started taking pictures, I too noticed the grainy quality of the pictures. Then I started reading the manual! What a great idea, huh? It has different “scenes” in which you can choose whatever current situation you are in while taking the picture. If you press the scene button, you can select up to 18 different scenes in which to take your pictures. You can choose anything from museum (no flash)and sporting events, to candlelight/parties and fireworks! All you need to do is select what’s right for the situation you’re in. You can also select auto scene where the camera will automatically select which scene it thinks you’re in. This is a great camera!! I love being able to turn my photos to black & white and sepia, and write little notes on them. You can also record messages to go with your pictures! I love the large touch screen, and being able to touch-up the pictures directly on the camera! Bottom line is, if you know how to use the camera, you shouldn’t have a problem, and you’ll most likely love it just as much as I do!

I use this battery with a Nikon S710. It is rated as less powerful than the OEM (original) battery, and while it lasts a bit less time than the original, if you carry a second battery “just incase” as I do, and rarely use the backup battery, this is definitely an economical solution. It charges just as fast as the OEM battery, doesn’t seem to cause any additional heat or anything like that, fits just as the OEM does and is significantly less expensive. I used it for a full day of taking photos at a theme park, mostly without a flash, and only the last 2 or 3 photos did I need to switch over to the OEM battery as the “backup”.

Nikon Coolpix L100 10MP Digital Camera Review

I primarily purchased this camera because I love my smaller Nikon Coolpix 7600 but wanted something with more zoom. I’ve only had this camera for about a week, but its great so far!

I do see the “focusing problem” someone was talking about, but its not really a problem…Its just that you can’t zoom in too closely on something if you are standing close to it – I think this is because of the lens type – its for long distances. But if you choose the macro setting specifically for close-ups, this can also be avoided.

When I first got the camera and took it out of the box, I immediately started taking pictures and they weren’t coming out so good, but this was because I didn’t know how to make the flash work – you have to raise it by hand – a quick check of the manual revealed this, but I was too anxious in the beginning to stop and read the manual.

Also, I had trouble getting used to choosing the different scene settings becuase it doesn’t have a dial like my old Coolpix did. Then I realized this is a GOOD thing, because the dial would constantly get turned when I didn’t realize it and be on the wrong setting when I took a picture.

If you are an expert photographer and want the control of an SLR, this is not something you will like, but for amateurs or people who just want more zoom than a small camera offers – this is a really good choice. It is not as bulky as an SLR and you don’t have to worry about changing lenses.

Be aware that the manual says this camera cannot be used with rechargable batteries.

Nikon Coolpix S570 12MP Digital Camera Review

I’ve had a Nikon S510 a while back which I loved, and the Nikon S570 is even better. I like vivid colors, and when set to “vivid”, the Nikon S570 produces photos with beautiful vivid colors and excellent contrast. The wide angle lens has great edge to edge sharpness. The Nikon S570 performs well, probably not the fastest (shutter lag and start-up time), but good nonetheless. The only thing that it’s really slow in is the wait time between shots, which seems to be an eternity. I’ve missed a few shots waiting for the camera to be ready for the next shot. Otherwise, I really love this camera. It’s small and light enough to fit in you pocket, and it takes great pictures. And for it’s price, it’s definitely a great buy.

I just got this great, new camera from Nikon and it has been just great. This falls into the category of “what will they think of next?” The camera itself is a solid performer for a point and shoot with a slightly better than average 5x zoom which is great for a point & shoot model. Of course, the projector is the “WOW!” factor. No more squeezing around the display on the back to show your friends the photos. The projector is a great way to share your images. The image quality is not as high as the LCD display, but fine for quick showings.

As an artist, I will use this camera to shoot new subjects, then project them onto a canvas so I can transfer the compositions into a painting.

Be sure to order the larger Nikon case since the other “S” cases are too small for this model.

Nikon Coolpix S710 14.5MP Digital Camera Review

I love the Nikon Coolpix models in this style and have bought a few of the earlier models. I have found all of them to be reliable and produce superb quality photos. The S710 is really an elegant piece of work, beautifully made and stylish.

Like other Coolpixes it has one feature that I believe is exclusive to Nikon, the Best Shot Selector. This is primarily useful in low light situations where the camera’s shutter speed will be quite slow. The way it works is this: when BSS is turned on, you can hold the shutter release down and the camera will take up to 10 successive shots, and save only the sharpest one. Since hand-held slow-shutter shots always vary a good deal in sharpness from shot to shot, this feature, discarding all but the sharpest picture, serves as sort of a “poor man’s image stabilization.” This can be combined with the camera’s VR (which is actual, optical image stabilization), the two working together to produce remarkably sharp photos in low light without the use of flash. Since all ultracompact cameras like this S710 have relatively weak built-in flash units, this is a most useful feature.

Another feature of the S710 that attracted me to it, and that my previous S-series Coolpixes don’t have, is that like the much larger and more “serious” digital SLRs, it allows the user to set the camera in Program, Shutter priority, Aperture priority or full Manual mode. This will probably not mean much if anything to people who aren’t really into photography, but for those of us who are used to having these controls on our SLRs and DSLRs it is a much appreciated feature. Along with these modes of course are the usual Coolpix scene modes, 16 of them — Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Panorama, etc., etc. — and also a Scene Auto Selector setting in which the camera will attempt to choose the scene mode best suited for the existing conditions and subject.

The lens is a sharp seven-element zoom with a range of 28mm wide angle (in 35mm camera equivalence) to 101mm short telephoto (equiv.) Maximum aperture is f/2.8 at the short end and f/5.6 at the long end. VR (stabilization) is optical, by the lens-shift method. In my opinion it would be very hard to improve on this lens for this type of camera.

Drawbacks? Nothing very serious. The buttons and rotary selector on the right side are somewhat cramped because of that big 3″ LCD monitor, and for the same reason there’s no optical viewfinder. This can be a slight problem in bright sunlight, but probably most users will be willing to give that up for the pleasure of the big monitor in a very small camera. Optical viewfinders in cameras of this type are never accurate anyway, while the LCD monitor is by nature perfectly accurate or extremely close to it.

Now frankly, I am dubious about putting 14.5 megapixels in such a small camera, primarily because cramming that many pixels into the little sensor means that each pixel is very tiny and therefore requires a good deal of amplification, and the result is increased electronic “noise” at anything much above the lowest ISO (sensitivity, equivalent to film speed in a film camera) setting. Unfortunately we are seeing this silly megapixel race in all brands of small cameras. The good news is that you can set the camera to a lower and more sensible resolution. I generally use mine at 5 megapixels and never at more than 8 Mp. These are the highest resolutions I am ever likely to need or want with this type of camera. Using higher resolutions only means getting fewer images on the SD card, slowing down the camera’s image processing, taking up more space on the hard drive when the images are transferred to the computer, etc. — all for no real benefit that I can see, and I have compared highly magnified images at various resolutions.

At the camera’s Auto setting it will self-adjust the sensitivity to anywhere between ISO 100 and 1600, depending on the existing light, and favoring the ISO 100 end which is noise-free. The maximum ISO when set manually is a whopping 12,800. This means you take take pictures in very low light without flash, especially when using the camera’s VR (which is turned on by default), though at this high ISO the image contains a great deal of noise — even though the camera automatically reduces resolution to 3 megapixels at ISO 6400 and 12,800. It is fun to play with and can be useful in many situations where you can’t or just don’t want to use flash — just be prepared for very grainy pictures. Most casual snapshooters will probably never use this feature.

Summing up: this is a terrific little camera for the enthusiast. It is really a lot more camera than the typical snapshooter needs, and it is just astonishing how Nikon has been able to pack all these features (I’ve only touched on a few of the most important ones) into such a slick, pocketable camera. I am sort of a collector-user, and have at least a couple of dozen compact and ultracompact digital cameras in addition to a half dozen DSLRs. Of the ultracompacts, this S710 is easily my favorite.

I passed by Bestbuy earlier the day I bought this to get a feel as to what size the bag really is. The bag is not too big but also not too small. I have a D40x with two lenses, the stock 18-55mm Nikkor as well as a 55-200 Nikkor. I also have a few filters, a small telephoto lens and a wide photo lens and although the bag is not too big, it fits all these easily and snugly! It really depends on what you need and want. It can also fit the cleaning pen along with any extra batteries in it’s inside and front pouches. The charger fits in the side pockets ( if you take the cord and put it in the other pocket). I like this bag as it really fits my needs. It is well made and the yellow stripe and the Nikon emblem add a nice touch. Now be aware that if u really want to fit any thing other in this bag than what I described above it might be difficult. I know some would like to fit their camcorder too and this would not be a bag for them. So I give this bag 5/5 because it really fits my needs. My advice is this, if u are not sure about the size and how it looks, drop by the near Bestbuy and check it out, They have it as a part of a kit (including the same DVD and an extra battery) and retails for 99$. As for the DVD it is a good starter DVD for people who never used an SLR before but for me it was just too basic so I gave it to my friend.

Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera Kit Review

Summary: I’ve been shooting the Nikon d40 since 2007, as a somewhat “serious” amateur. It has proven to be a decent DSLR overall, and terrific for the price. I do mostly casual portraits, outdoor/landscape and vacation shots. I’ve taken thousands of d40 shots and learned a lot. As of 2009, experienced shooters should view the d40 as a good backup camera, while beginners should really be considering the new d3000 instead.

Where I’m coming from:
I was shooting a 35mm Nikon N2020 from 1986 into the early 2000’s (I’m too lazy for film anymore, but I still believe I was getting my best pictures with film).
I then switched to digital point and shoot, but after a couple years I missed my old 35mm SLR — the image quality and great colors that came from film and the feel of using a “real” camera. I finally sprung for the d40 based on low cost and good reviews. (If you’ve been to Ken Rockwell’s site, you already know how much he likes his d40). After 2 years the d40 is still my trusty camera, and I’ve gotten *much* more than my money’s worth (I paid $450 back in ‘07). But make no mistake, my best N2020 shots are better than my best d40 shots!

Pros:
(all well known)
1. Practical. Reliable. Easy to operate.
2. Small and Lightweight for a DSLR (ideal for long hikes, but still much bulkier than any point-and-shoot)
3. Inexpensive.

Cons:
1. (Well known) The d40’s automatic exposure often works poorly. You really need to learn to adjust exposure (by some trial and error), or you’ll probably be disappointed with many of your pictures. From what I have read about the d3000 (e.g. Rockwell’s site), it is much better at autoexposure and also features a special guide mode for the first-time DSLR owner. If this is as good as it looks, it means the d3000 has dethroned the d40 for beginning photographers.
2. (Surprising) Small and Lightweight. Yes, I also listed this as a “pro”, but honestly my hands are a little too big for the d40. The controls and buttons are close together, which many people love, but for me, the d40 (or other small Nikon DSLRS like the d40x / d60 / d3000) is just too compact! Also, while the near weightlessless is often a virtue, it’s so light it tends to flop around as I carry it around on the strap.

… Now I’m looking at stepping up to the d90 (or its successor). But I’m sure my d40 will stay around as that trusty backup for a long time.
