Lensbaby .42X Super Wide Angle Accessory Lens (Black) Review

First, the good. I have to say the build quality of this super wide lens is actually superb! It feels much more solid and has hint of that Nikkor manual lens feel to it– metal body, solid weight, smooth, well built. It is certainly much better built than the plastic/aluminum Lensbaby Composer.

Now the important part– image quality. I really wanted to love using this lens. As you know the Lensbaby is wonderful on a full frame camera, with nice big sweet spot and amazing creamy bokeh for pleasing looking subject isolation. However, on a APS-C cropped sensor camera (Rebel, Canon 20D/30D/40D/50D, Nikon D60/70/80/90/200/300) it is just too much zoom as a general walk around lense. Thus I bought this Wide Angle accessory. The idea was to use 2 cameras while shooting my clients 1) a D300 + Lensbaby Composer + Super Wide and 2) a D700 plus a Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8. That would have been the ultimate outdoor shoot setup, but it just didn’t work out that way.

While the bokeh on a Lensbaby (without any filter) is creamy, soft, and just amazingly pleasing, I can’t say the same when this super wide angle lens is on. With it, chromatic aberration is the worst I’ve seen even with the default double glass element in Lensbaby, without even trying. It is so noticeable that people who have no idea what chromatic aberration is, notice it. Instead of seeing creamy soft bokeh that I’m used to seeing, you’ll see abrupt separation between white and blue/green tint, like very noticeable double-vision, which is very distracting and ugly. There is so much chromatic aberration that Lightroom 2.3 can only correct about 20% of it. For the reason that image quality is sub-par, I would have given this accessory 1 star, but I’m sure there are people who aren’t bothered by this and may even find it artistic. And also, the built quality is superb. So I’m giving it 2 stars instead.

I really enjoy using the bare naked Lensbaby, but this accessory has got to be the most unusable I’ve ever bought from Lensbaby. The aperture kit and the macro kits are all nice. But this wide angle lens is a big disappointment. I’m defaulting back to the 0.6X wide angle which IMHO is much better.

Lensbaby Creative Aperture Kit

Lensbaby Macro Kit (AMACK)

Lensbabies has launched a set of macro lenses for use with its selective-focus SLR camera lenses, Lensbaby 2.0 and the Original Lensbaby. The macro set consists of one +4 and one +10 macro lens that can be mounted to the front of the Lensbaby lens, allowing photographers to focus in on minute details with eye popping Lensbaby effects.

Lensbaby 2.0 and the Original Lensbaby bring one area of a photo into sharp focus, with that ’sweet spot’ surrounded by graduated blur. Photographers can fluidly move the sharp area around the photo by bending the flexible lens tubing. By mounting the +4 or +10 macro lenses (or both at the same time) to the front of the Lensbaby, photographers can use the selective focus effect at very close ranges.

A Lensbaby without a macro lens has a minimum focus of 16 inches. With the +4 lens attached the focus range is from 6 inches to 13 inches. With the +10 macro lens attached, the focus range is from 3.5 inches to 5 inches. With the +4 and the +10 stacked on each other and mounted to the front of a Lensbaby, focus range is 2 inches to 3 inches.

Lensbaby Macro Kit (AMACK) Review

I bought a Lensbaby for the great Holga-like effect, but found that this effect looks even better when applied to the macro world! Being able to get inches away from something and fill the frame is wonderful! If you’re a fan of the Lensbaby, you’ll fall in love with the macro capabilities.

Macro is such an obvious leap, as macro has always suffered from a shallow depth of field look unless you use incredibly specialized gear. People are used to seeing blur in macro photos. Putting this kit on a Lensbaby allows you to bring a lot of fun to the macro world and get a nice, controlled blur to your shots.

The really nice thing is you still keep your light sensitivity of your 50mm Lensbaby, meaning you get a macro lens that isn’t as weak as a typical 100mm+ macro lens when it comes to lighting. Still, I use a flash with my Lensbaby macro shots, and everything comes out great.

If you want the most value out of this product, it would be best to use this with the Lensbaby 3, but it is still perfectly usable with the original Lensbaby, as that is the model I have.

You know those times when every picture you take seems a little flat? Maybe nothing seems worth shooting. Everything’s been shot before. How can you possibly put your stamp on the scene around you?

Well, I’m not going to say that the Composer is the magic bullet. But it does help. It makes you see things in a new way, and that’s not something you get with every new lens. Household objects, flowers in your garden, the house next door . . . the Lensbaby makes them worth photographing again.

However . . . this is not really a walk-around, shoot everything lens. It is manual focus only. I’ve had mine for about a month, and the manual focus was easier than I thought it would be to get used to, but forget photographing babies or animals with this lens unless they are sleeping. You’ll take 100 photos and one will be in focus. Also, it gets a lot harder to tell when you’ve achieved focus when you move the sweet spot out of the center of the frame.

In addition, the Composer doesn’t deal with photos that have a large dynamic range very well. It’s easy to blow out your highlights if you’re not looking at your LCD screen after each shot. However, this wasn’t a problem I encountered that much, usually only during the middle of the day.

And buy the creative aperture kit! It makes night photography so much more fun when all your out of focus lights turn into hearts or stars or snowflakes. Definitely worth the extra ten dollars.

So, to sum up. This should be your second 50mm lens, not your first. But if you have all the regular lenses you need (we’ll call those your dinner lenses), don’t skip dessert. The Lensbaby Composer is worth it.

Lensbaby 2.0 Nikon F Mount SLR Camera Lens (LB2N)

The Lensbaby 2.0 is a second-generation selective-focus SLR camera lens, bringing brighter, sharper, and faster selective focus photography to professional and avid amateur photographers. Compared to the Original Lensbaby, Lensbaby 2.0 has a greater range of aperture settings, a much sharper “sweet spot” of focus, and a new levitating magnetic aperture system that makes it a snap to change apertures.

Lensbaby 2.0 and the Original Lensbaby bring one area of a photo into sharp focus, with that “sweet spot” surrounded by graduated blur, glowing highlights, and subtle prismatic color distortions. Photographers can fluidly move the sharp area around the photo by bending the flexible lens tubing.

Lensbaby 2.0 features an f2.0 aperture setting in addition to the Original Lensbaby’s f2.8, f4.0, f5.6, and f8.0. With Lensbaby 2.0, a photographer can control the size of the sweet spot of sharp focus by changing the apertures. The brighter the aperture, the smaller the sweet spot of focus, and the greater the amount of graduated blurring in the photo’s surrounding area.

Lensbaby 2.0 also features a coated, high-refractive-index, low-dispersion optical glass doublet instead of the singled uncoated optical glass element in the Original Lensbaby. Lensbaby 2.0’s optic creates a much sweeter sweet spot of focus, which allows photographers to print large photos and see fine details like eyelashes or individual threads of fabric in the sharp area. Photographers will also find that Lensbaby 2.0 has minimal diffusion even at the f2.0 aperture setting.

Lensbaby now has two products that will appeal to a broader range of photographers. Many photographers will want to have both versions of Lensbaby in their camera bags; others will naturally find a favorite. Those who love soft-focus, diffused images will gravitate towards the Original Lensbaby, while photographers who want a brighter lens with a very sharp sweet spot of focus and minimal diffusion will favor Lensbaby 2.0.

Lensbaby 2.0 also features a levitating magnetic aperture system that makes changing apertures faster than with the Original Lensbaby, which uses a rubber gasket to hold aperture disks in place. Lensbaby 2.0 uses three shielded magnets embedded inside the optics cup to suspend metallicized plastic aperture disks just above the coated optical glass doublet. When a photographer drops an aperture disk into Lensbaby 2.0, it quickly snaps into position.

Removal is also very easy: Lensbaby provides a complimentary Cell-Klear Lenspen that the photographer inserts through the center hole in the aperture disk to lift it out.

Both Lensbaby 2.0 and the Original Lensbaby combine several vintage camera technologies in a novel, patent-pending combination. The shooter focuses a Lensbaby using the same general principle used with a bellows camera, by moving the focusing collar in and out with his or her fingertips. The photographer moves the sweet spot of focus around the picture by bending the glass optic out of a parallel position to the image capture plane, like a tilt-shift lens.

This is great for those people who miss the selective focus aspects of the 4×5, but compact and easy enough to use on your digital or 35mm. I think the price is a little high for what you get, but that’s not too uncommon these days…. I am a professional wedding/portrait photographer, and I do landscapes and wildlife on my own, andit adds a nice ’something different’ to my work. I would recommend it!
