Olympus Evolt E500 8MP Digital SLR Review

There has already been a lot said on this camera so far so I’ll only add a few things. I have never owned an SLR type camera so this was a new experience for me – in fact, after owning the camera now for a month, I am finally just figuring out how to use it to its full potential – and its potential is very high.

First, let me say that this camera is an excellent value – 8 megapixels and packed with features, including the wonderful super sonic wave filter (which removes dust from the digital sensor). The Olympus line of Digital Zuiko lenses are fantastic, including one of the kit lenses (40-150).

A word to those folks like me (new to the SLR world) to clear up some confusion: a few of the reviewers have mentioned “bad low light performance.” This is not a camera issue, it is more a function of the lens that is attached (or, the speed of the “film” (AKA sensor) that you have the camera set too). Without getting into too much detail, kit lenses included with all of these entry-level DSLR’s are not exactly the best in low light situations – they are referred to in the photographic world as “slow” lenses – meaning that the aperture values they have at the low end are really only good in sunny conditions – at least without setting the camera to a much faster ISO (or film speed setting). So, in other words, the guy that said he is returning his Olympus to go get the canon kit is going to be just as unhappy with the performance of that camera in these situations as he was with the Olympus (from what I’ve read on the professional reviews of the canon, the kit lens is possibly the worst of all the major manufacturers). Blurry pictures are NOT the camera’s fault – they are the user – set the ISO higher to get a higher shutter speed or buy a lens with a “faster” aperture. This is the same with all cameras.

So where does this leave one who is interested in purchasing this camera, well there are two options (at least in my opinion):

1. Buy the 14-45 and 40-150 kit. This really is an excellent value, and while the 14-45 lens isn’t bad (it’s very good outdoors), the 40-150 lens is fantastic. Search any major review – especially those folks that are enthusiasts about olympus and they’ll tell you the same – this lens is remarkable for the price. However, if you do buy this kit (like I did), and you’re planning on taking a lot of pics indoors or in low light situations, do yourself a favor and upgrade to the 14-54 f/2.8-3.5 Digital zuiko lens. This is the kit lens for the professional Olympus DSLR – the E-1. I purchased this recently and the difference is night and day compared to the kit 14-45 f3.5-5.6. The camera has no issues in low light situations, and the “speed” of the lens is fantastic. (BTW, I bought this off of ebay for $400 – I think amazon has it for about $430 with free shipping – so it’s probably a toss up. (this price BTW is much cheaper than upgrading to comparable lenses of competitors like canon and Nikon – remember, you’re going to have to do it no matter which camera you buy if you want good indoor/low light performance).

2. If I had to do it over again, I may have just bought the body. Save yourself $200 and just buy the e-500 body. Then take that $200 and apply it to the price of the 14-54 f2.8-3.5 lens – this would put the total purchase around $1000 and you’ll have a fantastic lens to really learn how the camera works in all situations. So how do you get the great 40-150 lens? I noticed that there are probably 10 on sale on ebay at any given time (from people that are upgrading to the absolutely wonderful 50-200 digial zuiko zoom) for around $100-125.

Whichever option you choose, you really can’t go wrong – this is a wonderful camera for a beginner or serious amateur in SLR photography.

Olympus Evolt E520 10MP Digital SLR Camera Review

For the beginning to mid range photographer this is a great deal. The body is around $500, the lenses can be $100 each. The camera is real good in manual. However I have a lot of trouble with the scene or auto modes. The flash comes up and it is confusing why it won’t take the shot sometimes. Long story short, the auto metering system is too stupid for its own good.
In manual there can be a little noise at expected setting but noise filter, reduction, shock, and Image stabilization leave you with no excuse for that to become a problem. The shutter can do 1/4000 to 60″/Bulb; overall a good range. Aperture is all in the body (the lenses don’t have manual aperture.) Focusing is excellent and many options are offered in that regard. There are good on board effects, sharpness, contrast, saturation, greyscale with tint balance, and many more.
The dust feature is priceless. The lenses come with respective hoods. CARD SOLD SEPARATELY (that one got had me biking up to Walmart 8 in the morning. Warning- the software for downloading is kinda sucky. I would just copy from removable disk.

Overall I say it’s a great camera for the hobbies, student, or superstar on the way up! I am of the opinion that this is one fully loaded, serious piece of equipment at the top it its class.

I was a very active 35mm amateur many years ago and just sort of feel into the point and shoot mode. I decided to get back into trying some creative photography and a DSLR was the way to go but there are so many to choose from. Of course Canon and Nikon are the most popular so I read up on them but Pentax really kept rising to the top due to the fact all Pentax lenses work on all Pentax cameras with the exception of an adapter ring must be used on some, I really liked the idea of having that used market to shop from. Also as I read I found Pentax is tops in Europe and Asia and doesn’t even advertise in America so that explained why I hadn’t seen much on them. I really took my time and the Pentax K200D just seemed like the logical choice for me and I’m as pleased with it as I could possibly be. This camera is just fantastic, a little beauty. Amazing, excellent, really fun. Superb optics, great feel, cute and portable. I was getting bored with my Nikon D-80, ready for a move up. Considered getting the D-90, but then the Pentax K-7 was released with HDR built-in. Wanted t get back to Olympus, and considered the E-30, and the 620, but I left my decision for so long that the PEN was released. Glad I waited. The PEN is so much fun, its great to have a new toy. The price is just right for an everyday camera, and is size is so much better compared to carefully backpacking around a big d-SLR.

And the results …. the pics are superb! Just amazing. Face detection works like a charm. The video is stunning, just brilliant. The shutter is so quick, really responsive, no lag time. The art scenes are so fun to use. Funny little shutter noise. And I still haven’t take it off Auto yet! Nice to have some fun exploring.

Canon Digital Rebel XSI 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera(Silver) review

                I bought this camera because of a recommendation by Consumer Reports. I had a 35mm SLR in the past and was looking forward to a digital SLR. My first day out, I stuck to the ‘Full Automatic’ mode and reviewed the photos with some disappointment. While some were very nice, others weren’t. The wide range for the auto focus points often stole the focus from a more distant object to a closer one. This was not easy to overcome in full auto mode. After reading the manual I selected ‘Program Mode’ and was able to program the auto focus point to just use the one I wanted. These photos came out much, much better. I also played around with some of the other settings and found that the close-up mode works very nicely. I have not yet played around with some of the more technical aspects of the camera, but it gives lots of room to grow. I’m very happy with the camera and glad I bought it.
Bottom Line: this is not a ‘point-and-shoot’ camera and should not be considered a high end replacement for one. This camera is great for a weekend photographer, or photo hobbyist. Just be prepared to spend some time learning the camera, the menus and settings. Then take a few hundred pictures and find its limitations and possibilities.

Sony Alpha DSLRA350K 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera review

                 I am a semiprofessional photographer who, as a former Minolta user, has been trying to patiently wait on Sony to come out with a suitable pro model so as to continue to use lenses and accessories dedicated to my system. A year ago I bought this camera along with Sony’s 18-250mm zoom lens, used it for some work, including a wedding. My first impression of the camera, upon immediately opening the box was a bit negative; it is small and has a very plastic feel. But after using the camera only a few minutes I was impressed with the responsiveness of the auto focus and very impressed with the 14MP detail. (I had been using a 6MP Konica-Minolta Maxxum 7D) The a350 made some great pictures. With that said I decided to have this camera body converted to use as an infrared camera (paying a lab to remove the infrared sensor) and have been using it for infrared photography for a year now, with good results. Since then I have been waiting for Sony to come out with a true pro model, which it has: the Sony a700 and a900. But in the time I have had using the a350, I have come to really enjoy two features which the higher end Sony models still do not offer: live view, and a tilting sensor. These are really great features and I will wait until Sony has a pro model with these. With that said I have recently made a purchase of a second a350 body, taking advantage of some great closeout deals as the a380 is destined to replace this camera. Most of my work is landscapes and environmental portraiture. I hike with my cameras, I go on float trips with my cameras, I wade in streams with my cameras, I expose my cameras to a lot of risk. The idea of dunking a $3000 camera is nauseating. I can now have two small camera bodies to hike with and have a relatively small chance of such a disaster. This camera can produce great results with good exposures and technic. Professional reviews of the a350 camera tend to be negative regarding its performance in low light and high ISOs. How I would respond is that you just can’t put 14MP on an APS size sensor and have great performance in low light, regardless of the camera brand. With that said, 99 percent of the people interested in this camera would likely never notice this ‘low light’ performance issue. A camera is a tool, the camera body is only a component. The skill of the photographer is still much more important than miscellaneous technical details that tech people like to argue about. I would strongly recommend this as and entry level or backup professional camera.

The Nikon D700 can record full-resolution JPEG images at an astounding five frames per second (fps), or eight fps with the optional MB-D10 battery pack for up to 100 images, or up to 17 lossless 14-bit Nikon NEF (RAW) files. To write images efficiently, the Nikon D700 is also compliant with the next-generation of high-speed UDMA CompactFlash cards that will enable recording speeds up to 35 megabytes/second.

The Nikon D700 offers one of the fastest and most accurate advanced AF systems on the market today. Nikon’s Multi-CAM 3500FX autofocus sensor module features 51 AF points and the ability to use 3D tracking to focus and lock-on a moving subject. The 15 cross-type sensors and 36 horizontal sensors can be used individually or in groups, with the option for Single Area AF mode and Dynamic AF modes using groups of either 9, 21 or all 51 focus points. The system also features 3D Focus Tracking with automatic focus point switching that takes advantage of all 51 AF points as it uses scene color content and light information to accurately track the subject.

Intelligent features for sophisticated performance The Nikon D700 relies on a wealth of innovative Nikon technologies to help photographers create superb images. Nikon’s Scene Recognition System analyzes information from the 1,005-pixel RGB light sensor for use in auto exposure, auto white balance and autofocus calculations. The Scene Recognition System also assists autofocus by tracking subject position and automatically shifts the AF points used to match the subject’s movement within the frame. Photographers also have the option to enhance their pictures during or after capture with the Picture Control System and Active D-Lighting. Nikon’s Picture Control System enables users to adjust their images to pre-set parameters such as Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome that apply tweaks to image sharpening, tone compensation, brightness, overall tone and saturation. Enhanced Live View modes and viewfinder Ideal for studio, remote applications and more, Nikon’s Live View allows the photographer to compose the subject on the bright three-inch, TFT LCD monitor. In Handheld mode, the user is able to recompose the frame prior to actual shooting; familiar TTL phase-detection AF is activated, using all 51 AF points. Tripod mode is designed for precise focus accuracy with still subjects and tripod stabilization. It enables focal-plane contrast-detect AF on a desired point within a specific area. Remote view, focusing and shooting can also be controlled from a PC (via connection or wireless) using the optional Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 software. Additionally, the Virtual Horizon feature on the Nikon D700 can now be superimposed over the Live View monitor image to aid composition.

While using Live View to compose or review images and settings, users will appreciate the ultra-high resolution 920,000-dot VGA, three-inch TFT LCD monitor with tempered glass that provides a wide 170-degree viewing angle. The large monitor is remarkably effective when confirming the focus with enlarged playback images. The camera also outputs a video signal to an HD television using the new smaller HDMI-C standard, which is an excellent solution for workshop demonstrations or shooting tethered for clients.

Photographers will also be able to compose images easily using the wide and bright viewfinder that features an eye-level pentaprism with high refraction index and provides a 95-percent frame coverage with 0.72x magnification. Each of the 51 AF points, as well as a framing grid, can also be superimposed on the finder screen to suit the photographer’s personal preferences.

Rugged construction and durability High-strength magnesium alloy is used for the construction of the camera body, rear body and mirror box to create a precision platform, reduce weight and provide rugged durability. The camera is tested to stand up to the rigors of the globetrotting photographer and is weather sealed using precision O-rings where connections are made to effectively combat dust and moisture.

The shutter unit employs an assembly made of a new composite carbon fiber and Kevlar hybrid material. Tested on fully assembled cameras, the D700’s shutter unit has been proven through 150,000 cycles under demanding conditions. The self-diagnostic shutter constantly monitors and maintains shutter precision to ensure peak performance.

I’m one of those individuals that thinks 2, 3, 4 or maybe 5 times before buying a camera with this price, so based on the price and type of investment I did my homework, long hours of reading reviews, viewing hundreds of pictures taken with the D700 on Flickr until I decided to buy it 2 weeks ago.
Got the camera from The Shutterbug store bought through Amazon, I bought the refurbished version to save a little over $500 on the camera and dont regret it.
Its the seconds refurbished nikon unit ive bought ( bought a D60 for my sister ) and they work flawlessly.

First impressions on the D700
1- Extremely responsive
2- Great view finder ( although you get a 95% view, its awesome )
3- Love the bulky solid feeling of the camera
4- LCD Screen rocks ( very similar to the quality of the D90 or new D300s )
5- Contrast and colors taken on this camera are simply stunning, awesome, beautiful

Only negative so far is that the rubber cover for the mini usb & hdmi connectors constantly opens, this is a little weird considering that on my D90 its very solid and doesnt open that easy.

I’ve been using the D700 with the Sigma 24-70mm new HSM lens, which i highly recommend as well.

Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) review

I bought this DLSR as an upgrade from my Nikon D40 that I had for around 3 years. I felt that I had gotten to the point where I was being limited by the D40 so it was time to move up. I bought this body strictly for photography, although you can do 720p HD video as well. I am not all that interested in the video portion, although it is nice that it is there, so I don;t have to carry 2 devices if I want video. I would like to see a little more in the way of manual controls for video but perhaps if that is your main purpose for buying, you should look at the D300s. As a still camera is is fantastic! Sharp images and a beautiful layout of the command dials and buttons. The only thing that could get me to move from this camera at this point would be a full frame body. For my money in the DX line of bodies, the D90 is it for me!
