I just bought this camera, and from what I can tell so far it’s pretty good. Pros:
1.) Takes really clear pictures
2.) Nice BIG screen
3.) comes in a cool color
4.) Plays videos through windows media

Cons:
1.) So far the only thing which isn’t so bad is the shutter-lag. My old Kodak use to take super quick pics, this one is still fast, but not as fast as my old camera.

In general, this is a good camera i would recommend.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 12.1 MP Digital Camera Review

I just replaced my trusty ZS3 with the new ZS7 and, so far, I am very pleased with this camera. The output is much cleaner and smoother than the ZS3’s, much more refined. Compared to the ZS7, the ZS3 produced images that look brittle and over-processed. As with virtually all small-sensor cameras, the ZS7’s images are a little noisy (even at base ISO) if you look close enough. But noise is far less objectionable than ragged edges and smeared details, which is what I usually got from the ZS3. The images I’m getting from the ZS7 look surprisingly good even at 100% on-screen enlargement; whereas the ZS3’s output was virtually unusable at this magnification. The improvement is dramatic. Considering that the ZS7’s resolution has also increased from 10 to 12 MP (it’s actually a 14 MP sensor that is masked to create different aspect ratios), I’d say that Panasonic has done a really good job here.

The ZS7 improves on the ZS3 in several ways; but for me the most important new feature is Picture Adjustments, which let you turn down the amount of sharpening and noise reduction that are automatically applied to every image. Photographers who do their own post-processing will appreciate the ability to apply their own preferred methods of sharpening and noise reduction.

The next most important new feature (imho) is the addition of aperture/shutter-priority shooting modes. There isn’t much latitude for adjusting the f-stop in most small-sensor cameras because of defraction effects; but it’s great to be able to control the shutter speed manually.

The ZS7 also adds GPS, which can (thankfully) be turned off. Leaving it on shortens battery life.

Other improvements that I appreciate include (1) improved image stabilization, (2) new Venus processing engine, (3) High Dynamic mode, and (4) the LCD now has a good anti-glare coating.

All things considered, the ZS7 is an impressive upgrade that is easily worth the price.

Nikon Coolpix S230 10MP Digital Camera Review

When I first turned on the camera and started taking pictures, I too noticed the grainy quality of the pictures. Then I started reading the manual! What a great idea, huh? It has different “scenes” in which you can choose whatever current situation you are in while taking the picture. If you press the scene button, you can select up to 18 different scenes in which to take your pictures. You can choose anything from museum (no flash)and sporting events, to candlelight/parties and fireworks! All you need to do is select what’s right for the situation you’re in. You can also select auto scene where the camera will automatically select which scene it thinks you’re in. This is a great camera!! I love being able to turn my photos to black & white and sepia, and write little notes on them. You can also record messages to go with your pictures! I love the large touch screen, and being able to touch-up the pictures directly on the camera! Bottom line is, if you know how to use the camera, you shouldn’t have a problem, and you’ll most likely love it just as much as I do!

Leica D-LUX 3 10MP Digital Camera Review

First the bad news- NOISE!!!!! I guess with a sensor this small, there is just nothing you can do about it, short of using a noise plug-in with photoshop. At ISO 100 and 200 this is not a problem- jump to 400 and above and it becomes an issue.

Now the good news- because of the image stabilization, you can choose a lower speed, and minimize the noise as much as possible.

The lens is at least the equal of the one on my Contax TVSIII, which was the sharpest I have ever seen on a pocketable camera.

The internal flash is adequate for most conditions, but if you are takin advantage of the wide format, and trying to get a large room or group more than a few feet away, you should get the Metz compact digital flash which matches with it well.

I took RAW and JPEGs of the same scene and blew ‘em up to 13×19 inches. While the raw image was marginally better, the JPEG (with minimal tweaking) was almost as good, and both were quite usable.

If you plan on shooting RAW- bes sure to get a largish high speed SD card.

I love that you can shoot manually, and getting great portraits is a snap- easy to blur out the background and get an incredible sharp portrait.

The preset modes suck.

The screen is great.

If you have a good photo stitching program, and you take a landscape photo with the camera vertically (say 4 or 5 sequential shots), taking advantage of the wide format, you will be floored. With this combination you can print landscapes 48 inches wide. I did this at the Eagles game on Monday night (Eagles won- thankfully!)- and the print was remarkable.

Nobody on the whole planet has the brown leather case. i want one and I want one bad.

Get this camera, be prepared to deal with the limitations of any camera using a small sensor, and you will be a happy clam. You will be able to leave your SLR home more often, and have a great camera with you always so you never miss a shot.

This camera is great for most occasions. It is definitely not the best in terms of picture quality, but then again, if you want to get more, you have to spend a lot more. For the money, this is a great every-day-use camera.

Pros:

At the heart of the DMC-LX3, is its 1/1.63-inch CCD. Making the intentional choice to limit the number of megapixels to 10.1 on its CCD, Panasonic was able to give more space for each pixel and also redesigned the peripheral circuits and other components to further minimize noise generation. As a result, sensitivity is almost 40 percent higher and saturation is increased by 35 percent when compared to Panasonic’s 10 MP digital cameras, giving the DMC-LX3 outstanding image quality and a wide dynamic range, and meeting the demand for a camera that works optimally in low-light environments. The CCD is also capable of reproducing images in three aspect ratios — 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9. The new Multi Aspect mode allows the camera to take an image in all three aspect ratios simultaneously, allowing users to choose the version that best suits their needs.

Another major upgrade to the LX3 is the F2.0 24mm ultra wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Summicron lens. The F2.0 is about twice as bright as a F2.8 lens and can shoot at higher shutter speeds to capture clear, blur-free images in dimly lit environments. In addition, the 24mm lens captures approximately a 213-percent larger viewing angle than a normal 35mm camera and 136% larger compared to a 28mm wide-angle lens. As a result of the F2.0 lens, the LX3 produces high resolution and minimal distortion and artifacts — such as chromatic aberrations, ghosting and flaring.

The LX3 also incorporates the Venus Engine IV, which provides more advanced signal processing technology for producing higher-quality images with reduced noise in both luminance signal and chromatic signal processing — as compared to the Venus Engine III. The Venus Engine IV supports high sensitivity recording enabling the DMC-LX3 to record at up to ISO 3200 at full resolution and even up to ISO 6400 when using high sensitivity mode, enough to capture subjects in low lighting without using a flash. The Venus Engine IV also supports a faster response time, allowing the camera to shoot 2.5 shots per second at full resolution and six shots per second in High-Speed Burst mode.

The easy-to-use joystick operation which was featured in its predecessor continues with the LX3, as its intuitive design makes selecting different settings on the camera, including focus, aperture and shutter speed — easy and quick. Other convenient design elements include a switch on the side of the lens barrel that allows the user to quickly change the focus modes between Manual Focus, Auto Focus and Macro Auto Focus. When choosing Manual Focus, the focus distance and the depth of field according to the zoom range and aperture is also displayed. For setting white balance, the LX3 provides a new color temperature display function, and still includes the Two-Axis white balance adjustment settings offered in previous models. Users can also customize and store their own personal settings of up to four unique functions and instantly recall them later using the mode dial.

Furthering its creative options, the LX3 also features a Film mode with six color types and three types of monochrome selections. Much like selecting from different film types, this function gives the user the flexibility and creative freedom to take more expressive digital photos. Also, when using the Multi-film mode, the LX3 produces a maximum of three images from a RAW file for the user to compare the different textures. Another new feature is the multiple-exposure feature, which lets the user create artistic photos by overlaying up to three consecutive images; while still viewing the last image on the 3.0-inch LCD screen. The LCD on the LX3 is new and improved with a 460,000-dot high resolution.

While the LX3 allows full manual control for more advanced photography, it also includes Panasonic’s Intelligent Auto mode (iA), including the new feature, AF (auto focus) Tracking. AF Tracking automatically tracks the image subject and locks it into focus, making it easier for anyone to capture sharp, well-focused photos. The AF Tracking technology also improves face detection accuracy, allowing for crisp, sharp-focused shots even if the subject moves or turns their face. Other iA technologies include Intelligent Exposure, Digital Red-eye Correction, MEGA O.I.S, Intelligent ISO, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection (up to 15 faces) and Quick AF.

The DMC-LX3 has the ability to record High Definition (HD) video in 1280 x 720p at 24fps. With the newly added HD component output capability, still and moving pictures can be viewed by connecting the camera to a TV via an optional component cable (DMW-HDC2). In addition, the LX3 features Image Leveling, so when a captured image “leans” to the right or left because the camera was held at a slight angle when the photo was taken, this feature rotates the image to straighten it and crops the unnecessary edges.

First let me establish some credentials. I have been making photographs for 57 years, for personal satisfaction and for work. For 24 of those years, I also ran a part-time wedding photography business. I have been using digital cameras since 2001 and have owned many Nikon digital SLRs (D100, D200, D300) and a number of compact digital cameras.

With that out of the way, let me simply say, “the Panasonic LX3 is the BEST compact digital camera I have ever owned and, in my opinion, there is nothing else currently in its class that even comes close.” I feel so strongly about the merits of the LX3, I am purchasing another one to put up for future use. It’s THAT good!

Yes, its a bit pricey ….. no, it will not replace a DSLR for some things ….. no, it is not for everyone. Because of the limited zoom range (35mm equivalent of 24mm to 60mm), I would not recommend the camera to those who might need more zoom for outdoor sports, etc. But, if you can live within the zoom limitations, you will find the 24mm wide angle, amazing low-light capability and VERY effective stabilization system to be priceless.

The “iA” setting (puts the camera on “fully automatic”) is the best I have ever seen, allowing anyone to routinely make outstanding images. For experienced photographers, the LX3 opens up a whole new world for compact cameras, used when it is not possible or convenient to carry a DSLR or used as a back-up or companion camera for your DSLR.

Nikon Coolpix L100 10MP Digital Camera Review

I primarily purchased this camera because I love my smaller Nikon Coolpix 7600 but wanted something with more zoom. I’ve only had this camera for about a week, but its great so far!

I do see the “focusing problem” someone was talking about, but its not really a problem…Its just that you can’t zoom in too closely on something if you are standing close to it – I think this is because of the lens type – its for long distances. But if you choose the macro setting specifically for close-ups, this can also be avoided.

When I first got the camera and took it out of the box, I immediately started taking pictures and they weren’t coming out so good, but this was because I didn’t know how to make the flash work – you have to raise it by hand – a quick check of the manual revealed this, but I was too anxious in the beginning to stop and read the manual.

Also, I had trouble getting used to choosing the different scene settings becuase it doesn’t have a dial like my old Coolpix did. Then I realized this is a GOOD thing, because the dial would constantly get turned when I didn’t realize it and be on the wrong setting when I took a picture.

If you are an expert photographer and want the control of an SLR, this is not something you will like, but for amateurs or people who just want more zoom than a small camera offers – this is a really good choice. It is not as bulky as an SLR and you don’t have to worry about changing lenses.

Be aware that the manual says this camera cannot be used with rechargable batteries.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 10.1 MP Digital Camera Review

I have a pro friend who got a review copy of this for a couple of days. He let me use it for one of them, as he hasn’t shot with a point and shoot in a long time. I ordered my own within the first hour. What a camera. The zoom on this baby is amazing. It has a true wide angle and a long reach. Photos on both ends of the reach are sharp and have good color and saturation. I almost drooled when I printed out the samples. They are flat out the best point and shoot jpegs that I’ve had the pleasure of taking. Raw files would be nice but aren’t available, nor is much in the way of manual exposure control. As a bit of a control freak, I thought that would be a problem but honestly, Panasonic’s smart mode selection is brilliant at getting good, sharp exposures. Focusing is fast, even in low light. Flash seems fine, neither superior nor awful. I took 400 images and a short movie on my first outing and the battery still had some juice. It also has fast and accurate face detection. Holding the camera in my hand, pointing it in the general direction of people on the street without being obvious got consistently good focus. Oh, the image stabilization works very well, too.

The camera is just small enough to fit in a shirt pocket but unless you’re wearing heavy denim it’s just to heavy to be comfortable there. It slips fine in a vest pocket or jacket, though. Point and shoots have definitely improved in low light performance since I bought my last one. I got perfectly usable shots at 400 ISO. A little noise touch up and they print fine at 11×14. At 1600 ISO you can still get a usable Flickr sized image, again with a run through a noise processor like Noise Ninja.

It has a new video mode that uses half the memory of the normal mov files that it also supports. But finding where they are on the card is a bit of a treasure hunt the first time. They are also a pain to process. I ran a conversion program to turn them into H.264 format. That makes editing much easier. Do that first thing. You can even run the optical zoom while shooting movies, though focus can be a bit slow. Videos are much better than those from the Flip that is all I own for movies.

Great zoom, great photos, great lens, reasonable size, scary accurate automatic mode switching, wow!. If it had a bit more manual control it might be better, then again, I’ve got a few hundred really nice images. So no complaints.
