Sigma EX DG 52mm Multi-Coated UV Filter Review

I’ve bought many UV filters for my cameras, from Hoya and B&W to Promaster and I must say that the Sigma EX MC is the best one. Although most companies claim that their UV filters cut down haze, in reality my experience has been that they really don’t. However, I found the Sigma UV filter to noticeably cut down haze and produce very clean, sharp images without altering picture quality in any way. I strongly recommend this filter to protect your camera lens and reduce haze that can ruin your pictures.

Zeikos ZE-UV67 67mm Multi-Coated UV Filter Review

Truth be told, I’d never heard of Zeikos until I stumbled onto this filter in Amazon. The company’s website wasn’t exactly helpful in providing useful information, but they do manufacture a broad range of photographic and electronics products and were present in PMA ‘09, the imaging industry’s largest event.

Plus, I was having trouble finding a decent 67 mm UV filter in Amazon, where I was also buying my Olympus 50-200 mm f/2.8-3.5 SWD lens. AND the product page told me it was made in Japan and was multi-coated. Not as expensive as the B+Ws and other top-name brands and not as inexpensive as the usual Tiffens (with which I’ve had some negative experience), I decided to risk it.

It is a matter of personal preference to use protection filters or not, and I openly subscribe to the “pro filter” group for myriad reasons — not least of which because it is easier to remove fingerprints and general gook from filters than it is from lenses.

The Zeikos 67 mm UV filter is being a good experience so far. It has been on the lens for almost two months and is behaving exactly as it should, protecting the lens surface and not affecting my photos. I’ve tested the lens with and without it and can see no difference in the results, which is good. The filter feels solid and well made.

Sometimes it’s a good thing to take a risk!

The Zeikos folks produce great coated filters, bar-none!! I will be looking to them for all my filter needs in the future. Good glass, & the coating is very, very well done and professionally crafted. I am in the process of replacing all my filters with this brand.These filters are as good as the Nikon brand for 1/10th the cost, “No-Jive”!!

HOYA 58CIR 58mm Circular Polarized Filter

Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarised and polarising filters are used to select which light rays enter your camara lens. PL (Linear Polarising) and PL-CIR (Circular Polarising) filters have the same effect, but it is important that you choose the correct version for your camera. They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc. They also enable colors to become more saturated and appear clearer, with better contrast. This effect is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds. HOYA’s polarising filters do not affect the overall color balance of a shot.

Many of today’s cameras use semi-silvered mirrors or prisms to split the light entering the viewfinder in order to calculate exposure and focusing distance. PL (Linear Polarising) filters can sometimes interact with these items to give unpredictable exposure or focusing. So we recommend that you choose a PL-CIR filter unless you have a manual focus camera which has no beam splitter.

HOYA 58CIR 58mm Circular Polarized Filter Review

I’ve bought hoya’s cir-pol 52mm filter for $15 and was little bit disappointed after opening package. The item was made in Philippines instead of Japan and apparently didn’t have any coatings. But for the price it works very good and it still stands on one of my lenses. Then I’ve contacted to the seller and the manager explained me the difference between hoya series:
Green (~$15) – made in Philippines. No multicoating. It’s what I’ve ordered.
Standard (~$35) – the same as Green but made in Japan
HMC (~$60) – three layers of multicoating. made in Japan.
HMC Super (~$75) – seven layers of multicoating. made in Japan.
Also there are Pro1 and HD series (with 12 layers of multicoating) for ~$100-150 but I don’t see any need to buy them exepting if one is a professional photographer with very expensive lenses.
After learning that I’ve ordered an extra-thin Super HMC filter from Adorama. It works better than Green, and not only about flare – it gives darker sky (once I even could get almost black color of sky). Also it’s made more sturdy. Thin design helps to avoid vignetting on my wide-angle lens. It doesn’t have bayonet on its front side but it comes with special rubber cap which I like very much.

In August 2008, I was going to buy the B + W F-Pro UV 010 Double Coated filter for my new Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens. But, the salesperson suggested I try the new-to-his-store Sigma DG 58mm Multi-Coated UV Filter for $10 less than the B + W. If I wasn’t happy with the results, he would exchange it for the B + W.

After a couple of weeks of shooting, it wasn’t necessary to switch. I have used Hoya, Tiffen, Nikon, and B + W UV glass filters of varying threaded diameters in the last 4 decades. Surprisingly, this Sigma is the best threaded glass UV filter I have owned.

The filters are great and the case is much smaller than I thought which makes it easy to fit into my camera bag.

Just FYI, if you’ve never put one on your camera (I hadn’t), the filter is threaded. Just put the filter on your lens and rotate until it is snug.

It also allows for the Nikon lens cap to be applied.

I use the clear lens filter to protect the lens from dust, scratches, etc.

Great value and fairly heavy duty. It fits my 18-55mm lens just fin on my Nikon D60 camera.
